American Association of Veterinary State Boards conducts the Veterinary Technician National Examination
Popularly Known as VTNE , used to evaluate entry-level veterinary technicians’ competency to practice and to be credentialed
The important fact is that if you are a candidate who wishes to pursue a career as a licensed veterinary technician, then you must definitely take this VTNE exam. This VTNE exam is administered by the AAVSB (American Association of Veterinary State Boards) which consists of about 57 veterinary licensing board
AAVSB contracts with the administering agencies to provide the exam for their use and partners with Professional Examination Service (PES) for examination development and administration services regarding the VTNE. The exam is administered at Prometric Testing Centers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Eligibility Criteria
Should have been graduated in veterinary technology program accredited by the American or Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)
Submit government issued form of identification
Each Individual can take the exam Upto 5 Times
A Special Request has to be made to the Official Board if one wishes to take up the exam more than 5 times
States Like Alaska, Delaware, Wisconsin and Washington llow On the Job Training (OJT) or alternate pathways to being eligible for the VTNE
Some states allow candidates with a veterinary education, with a Bachelor of Science in a related field, or from a program approved by the state to take the VTNE and become credentialed Veterinary Technicians
Some states allow foreign educated Veterinarians or Veterinarian Technicians to take the VTNE and become credentialed as Veterinary Technicians
Most states and all provinces require that VTNE candidates must be graduates of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American or Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

- Examination windows July 15-August 15: Application and documentation deadlines June 15
- Examination windows November 15-December 15: Application and documentation deadlines October 15

Online PRACTICE TEST
Two versions of the VTNE online practice test are offered. The test is designed to assess a candidate's strengths and weaknesses in each of the seven content areas of the VTNE.
•Each practice test is $45.00 per attempt.
•Each practice test contains 75 questions and is 90 minutes.
•Candidates are provided with diagnostic information by practice domain to assist in planning and preparing for the actual VTNE.
